DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN

DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN

Better than the last two seasons of the original show, better than the continuation. Patrick Gibson, the kid playing "young Dexter" looks a little like Michael C. Hall but sounds JUST like him. Christian Slater is great as Harry. And Molly Brown is gonna break our hearts as Deb.

Welcome back, Dex. I missed you.

The reason I love "Dexter" is that he is struggling with a core human urge and reality: to be a good human being, live a meaningful life, even though he believes himself an evil and twisted thing, so afraid of his emotions that he claims not to have them.  Dad Harry made a terrible mistake, attempting to channel his son's urges into the least damaging pathway possible.   It was an effort doomed to fail, and destined to create far more destruction of innocent life than the single soul he tried to save.   In some interesting ways, Harry is the villain of the piece, even though he, like Dexter, tried to be a good man.

There are lessons here.  The "Three Gates" would have minimalized the damage, but Harry couldn't see it.   The consequences were inevitable, I believe. "Dexter" is a tragedy unfolding in super-slow motion, and you watch with fascination…and also recognition.

We ALL compromise at times.   There are ALWAYS times that dishonesty, cruelty and ignoring results seems the easier path.  But it is safest and sanest to take the hit, find a way to reach your goals while staying within the Gates.  The chances of your actions, however justifiable, will create massive chaos and destruction even to the things you love and cherish, is simply too high.

Harry should have taken the hit and gotten his son professional help.  It would have been the kindest thing: no matter how he tried to create a set of "Laws" that would protect the innocent, he was doomed…and Dexter damned.
